The Red Square Book Festival, the main event in the Russian literary and publishing world, has been held in extraordinary conditions for the third year in a row. In the previous two years, coronavirus and related restrictions were on the agenda. This time there is a crisis in the book industry, provoked by sanctions
On June 3, the book festival of the same name opens on Red Square. And if this year Stephen King's novel "Billy Summers" can still be purchased here, then the fate of the release of his new books in Russia is still in question. In March, the American horror king notified a Russian publisher about the suspension of new contracts due to Russia's special operation in Ukraine.
Briton Neil Gaiman also publicly declared his desire to stop selling his books in Russia. But Russians can still read the texts they wrote before. Fans of J.K. Rowling cannot access digital versions of her works, but paper versions are still available. The refusal to cooperate with Russian publishers was announced by such important copyright holders on the international market as Penguin Random House (cooperates with Margaret Atwood and Tony Morrison), Simon & Schuster (cooperates with King, Dan Brown).
The crisis has not yet gained strength, but book prices are noticeably different from last year. According to market participants, the growth was 10-15%.
